03/08/2006: "The Gospel According to PK -- Do atheists opt out?"
A "religion" thread in MNID came around to an exchange among the posters about atheists beliefs. PK said something like they took the easy way out, for now.... but Barbara said they didn't make that choice. I still wonder. If prevenient grace is for real, don't atheists refuse God's summons? I'm just asking.......
PK
So, I think I'm beginning to understand atheists. It is definitely easier to say there is nothing beyond death on earth, because it requires nothing more than just living it out. And here I thought it was easier to walk with God. hmmmmm.....
BARBARA
You make it sound as if atheists deliberately opt not to believe out of expediency or because it is the path of least resistance. You are wrong. They do not believe. Period. They have heard yours and others arguments, and they do not believe. Period. What you fail to understand, or at least seemingly cannot accept is that a person can honestly and truly not believe.
PK
You are correct that I cannot fathom anybody not just realizing there is a Creator/Sustainer. Opting out is not exactly what I would call it, as much as those who "believe" opted in. "Non-believers" are just stubborn people who don't want to listen to their hearts and minds, so to speak, but prefer to ignore the obvious signs. This is said somewhat tongue-in-cheek and with no malice at all, anymore than I would take offense at somebody telling me (and they have) that a smart girl like me ought to know better than to rely on faith...
